Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is a professional Twenty20 cricket team based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008 as one of the league's eight original franchises, the team plays its home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, a venue with a capacity of 40,000 spectators located in the heart of Bengaluru's commercial district.

The franchise was originally owned by Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group through its subsidiary United Spirits Limited (USL), which acquired the Bangalore franchise for $111.6 million at the inaugural IPL auction in January 2008, making it the second-highest bid behind only Mumbai Indians. The franchise changed hands in 2023 when United Spirits sold its controlling stake to Diageo, and in March 2026, a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, along with The Times Group and Blackstone, acquired the franchise for a record $1.78 billion—the highest valuation ever paid for an IPL franchise.

After 18 seasons without a championship, RCB won its first IPL title in 2025, defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The team has qualified for the playoffs in ten of its eighteen seasons and also finished as runners-up in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20.

History

Formation and Early Years (2008–2010)

The Indian Premier League was announced in September 2007 as a Twenty20 cricket competition set to begin in 2008. At the franchise auction held in Mumbai on January 24, 2008, the Bangalore franchise was acquired by Vijay Mallya, chairman of the UB Group and owner of the Kingfisher beer brand, for $111.6 million—slightly less than the $111.9 million paid by Reliance Industries for Mumbai Indians.

Ahead of the inaugural player auction, the IPL designated Rahul Dravid as the "icon player" for the Bangalore franchise, a designation that ensured he would be paid 15% more than the highest bid player. The franchise assembled a roster featuring several prominent international and Indian players, including Jacques Kallis, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn, and Cameron White. In the second round of the auction, they signed Ross Taylor, Misbah-ul-Haq, and then-India under-19 World Cup-winning captain Virat Kohli for 1.5 million rupees.

Dravid was named captain for the 2008 season, with Venkatesh Prasad appointed as head coach. The team won four of 14 matches and finished seventh in the eight-team table. Dravid was the sole player to score more than 300 runs in the tournament, while Jacques Kallis was benched for several matches due to poor form. Midway through the season, CEO Charu Sharma was replaced by Brijesh Patel. The franchise's chief cricketing officer, Martin Crowe, resigned, and Prasad was replaced by Ray Jennings as head coach.

In the 2009 auction, the franchise signed Kevin Pietersen for a record $1.55 million, making him the most expensive player alongside Andrew Flintoff of Chennai Super Kings. Due to general elections in India, the tournament was held in South Africa that year. Pietersen was named captain initially, but after a string of losses, Anil Kumble took over when Pietersen left for national duty. RCB's performance improved dramatically under Kumble, winning six of their last eight matches to finish third in the league table. They defeated Chennai Super Kings in the semi-final but lost the final to Deccan Chargers by six runs.

Kohli Era and Final Heartbreaks (2011–2021)

Virat Kohli, who had been with the franchise since its inaugural season, took over as captain in 2013 and led the team through 2016, becoming one of the most recognizable faces in IPL cricket. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs consistently and made their third IPL final in 2016. That year, RCB finished second in the league stage and defeated Gujarat Lions in the qualifier, but lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Kohli captained RCB for 143 matches across his tenure, accumulating 8,661 runs at an average of 39.54, with eight hundreds and 63 half-centuries. He remained the only player to have represented the same franchise in every IPL season from 2008 through 2025. The 2016 final ended with RCB needing just 138 runs to win but falling short despite Kohli's 76 from 54 balls.

Transition and Breakthrough (2022–2025)

Following Kohli's tenure, Faf du Plessis took over as captain in 2022 and 2023. The appointment of Andy Flower as head coach in 2024 marked a new direction for the franchise. Flower, a former England coach, guided RCB to fourth place in 2024, losing in the eliminator, and second place in the 2025 league stage behind Punjab Kings on net run-rate.

On June 3, 2025, RCB finally won their first IPL title, defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in Ahmedabad. Kohli top-scored with 43 from 35 balls in his 267th IPL match, enabling RCB to post 190 for 9. Punjab fell short at 184 for 7, despite Shashank Singh's unbeaten 61 from 30 balls. "This means so much to me. I've given each and every ounce of energy to this team," Kohli said after the match.

Ownership and Valuation

The franchise's ownership has undergone significant changes over its 18-year history. Originally owned by Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group, the team was controlled by United Spirits Limited (USL), a Diageo subsidiary, after financial difficulties forced Mallya to sell his stake. In 2023, Diageo sold USL's controlling stake in the franchise, transferring control to a new ownership structure.

In March 2026, a landmark deal saw a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, along with The Times Group (via the Sahu Jain family) and Blackstone, acquire the franchise for $1.78 billion. According to brand valuation reports, RCB's brand value was estimated at $269 million in 2025, among the highest in the IPL. The franchise's valuation had increased from its original purchase price of $111.6 million in 2008—a $1.67 billion increase in absolute terms over 18 years.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru plays its home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, formerly known as the Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium. Established in 1969, the stadium is one of India's oldest cricket venues and has hosted several memorable IPL matches, including the 2016 final. The ground's dimensions and pitch conditions have historically favored batsmen, leading to high-scoring encounters. In March 2026, the Karnataka government cleared the venue to host matches after a security review. For IPL 2026, RCB is scheduled to play five home matches at the stadium.

Team Identity

The franchise's colors are red and black, visible in the team's jerseys and branding. The logo features a stylized "RCB" monogram with a crown element, representing the "Royal" in the team's name. The team has been known as Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2008 to 2024, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2025 onward following the city's official name change.

Key personnel for IPL 2026 include captain Rajat Patidar, who took over leadership duties in 2025, and head coach Andy Flower. The coaching staff also includes Dinesh Karthik as batting coach and Richard Halsall as fielding coach. Patidar, a Madhya Pradesh-born batsman, was appointed captain after the departure of Faf du Plessis.

Rivalries

Royal Challengers Bengaluru has developed several intense rivalries over its IPL history. The rivalry with Mumbai Indians, featuring the narrative between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, has produced several memorable matches including super over finishes and high-scoring chases at Wankhede Stadium.

The rivalry with Chennai Super Kings is one of the most heated in the IPL. The two teams have met over 30 times, with CSK winning the majority of encounters. The rivalry intensified in 2011 when RCB lost both the IPL and Champions League Twenty20 finals to CSK. A 2023 controversy involving a song targeted at RCB players sparked debate about cross-team relations.

Matches against Kolkata Knight Riders have also produced dramatic encounters, including RCB's heavy loss in the very first IPL match in 2008, which remains one of the most lopsided results in league history.
