The team was suspended from the IPL for two years from July 2015 to 2017 due to the involvement of its owners in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting case. History
Formation and Early Years (2008–2009)
The Indian Premier League was announced in September 2007 as a Twenty20 competition with the inaugural season planned for 2008. Chennai was one of the eight city-based franchises unveiled for the inaugural edition in January 2008. The franchise was originally owned by India Cements, with N. Srinivasan, the company's vice chairman and managing director, serving as the primary stakeholder.
At the inaugural player auction, MS Dhoni was bought for $1.5 million—the most expensive buy at the auction. The franchise also acquired international cricketers including Suresh Raina, Matthew Hayden, Jacob Oram, Stephen Fleming, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Michael Hussey. Dhoni was named captain for the inaugural season, with Kepler Wessels appointed as head coach.
The team played its first IPL game on April 19, 2008, against Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) at Mohali, winning by 33 runs. The Super Kings finished the league stage in third place with eight wins from 14 games. In the semi-final, they beat Punjab Kings by nine wickets to reach their first IPL final. In the final at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, Rajasthan Royals won off the last ball to defeat the Super Kings and lift the first IPL title.
First Championship Era (2010–2012)
In 2010, CSK won only two of their first seven matches but won five of their next seven to finish third in the league stage with seven wins from 14 matches. In the semi-final, CSK scored 142 for 7 against defending champions Deccan Chargers but restricted the opposition to 104 runs to win by 38 runs. In the final, CSK defeated Mumbai Indians by 22 runs to secure their first IPL title.
The victory qualified CSK for the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa. The team finished at the top of Group A with three wins and a defeat, then defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 52 runs in the semi-final. In the final at Johannesburg, CSK beat the Warriors of South Africa to win their first CLT20 title.
In 2011, CSK retained most of their core players and finished second in the league stage. They defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the qualifier to reach the final, where they faced RCB again and won by six wickets to clinch their second consecutive IPL title, becoming the first team to win back-to-back IPL championships. CSK also won the 2011 CLT20, defeating Mumbai Indians in the final.
Suspension and Comeback (2015–2018)
In July 2015, CSK was suspended from the IPL for two years due to the involvement of its owners in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting case. The case involved Gurunath Meiyappan, Srinivasan's son-in-law, who was found guilty of betting on matches. The franchise was replaced in the 2016 and 2017 seasons by Rising Pune Supergiant and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.
CSK returned to the IPL in 2018, with Dhoni resuming captaincy and Stephen Fleming continuing as head coach. Despite finishing second in the league stage, CSK defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final by eight wickets to win the title in their comeback season, becoming the first team to win an IPL title after returning from a suspension.
Continued Success (2021–2023)
CSK continued to be a consistent performer in the IPL, reaching the finals in 2021 and 2023. In 2021, they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the final to win their fourth IPL title. The 2023 season saw CSK win their fifth championship, defeating Gujarat Titans in a final decided on the last ball when Ravindra Jadeja hit a four to seal victory. The 2023 title tied CSK with Mumbai Indians as the most successful IPL franchise with five championships each.

Chennai Super Kings is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), a subsidiary of India Cements. The franchise was originally owned directly by India Cements, with N. Home Ground

Chennai Super Kings plays its home matches at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, commonly known as Chepauk Stadium. Established in 1916, it is one of India's oldest cricket venues and has hosted several historic matches, including the first ever Test match in India in 1934. The stadium has a capacity of 38,200 spectators.
The ground has traditionally favored spin bowling due to the dry, turning pitch, which has made it a challenging venue for visiting teams. The stadium also hosted the 2023 IPL final, where CSK defeated Gujarat Titans.
Team Identity
The franchise's colors are yellow and navy blue, visible in the team's jerseys and branding. The logo features a stylized lion. The team is nicknamed "Yellow Army" due to their distinctive yellow jerseys and their passionate fanbase.
For IPL 2026, the team is captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over from MS Dhoni in 2024. Stephen Fleming serves as the head coach, a position he has held since 2009.
