Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro Kamado is the main protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. A kind-hearted boy who lived with his family in the mountains selling charcoal, his life changed forever when a demon slaughtered his family. His younger sister Nezuko Kamado, the sole other survivor, was turned into a demon herself. Driven by the desire to find a cure for Nezuko and avenge his family, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps. He took a shine to Kanao.
Early Life
Tanjiro was born and raised on a mountain where his family ran a charcoal-selling business. He was the eldest son of the Kamado family and took on the responsibility of providing for his mother and five younger siblings after his father Tanjuro passed away from illness. Despite the family’s modest means, Tanjiro maintained a cheerful and compassionate disposition.
His father, though frail, was a practitioner of the Hinokami Kagura — a ceremonial dance passed down through the Kamado family that would later prove to be a form of Sun Breathing, the original breathing style from which all others derive.
The Tragedy
While Tanjiro was away selling charcoal in the nearby town, the demon Muzan Kibutsuji attacked his family. Upon returning home, Tanjiro discovered that his mother and siblings had been slaughtered. Only Nezuko showed signs of life, but she had been transformed into a demon by Muzan’s blood.
When Nezuko attacked Tanjiro in her newly awakened demon state, she showed an unusual moment of hesitation — tears streaming from her eyes — suggesting that her human consciousness had not been entirely extinguished. This moment became the foundation of Tanjiro’s quest: the belief that demons could be returned to their human form.
Training and the Final Selection
Tanjiro was discovered by Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, who recognised something extraordinary in Nezuko’s restraint and Tanjiro’s determination. Giyu directed Tanjiro to his former master, Sakonji Urokodaki, a retired Water Hashira living on Mount Sagiri.
Under Urokodaki’s tutelage, Tanjiro spent two years training in the Water Breathing technique. He learned to control his breathing, strengthened his body, and honed his sense of smell — an ability so refined that he could detect the scent of demons and even perceive the emotional states of others.
The training culminated in Tanjiro splitting a massive boulder with his blade, a feat accomplished with the spiritual guidance of Sabito and Makomo, two of Urokodaki’s former students who had perished during their own Final Selection.
Breathing Techniques
Tanjiro is primarily a practitioner of Water Breathing, which he learned from Sakonji Urokodaki. Water Breathing is characterised by fluid, adaptive movements that mimic the flow and force of water. Tanjiro mastered all ten forms of Water Breathing during his training.
Later in his journey, Tanjiro began to recall and develop the Hinokami Kagura, the dance his father performed. He gradually realised that this was in fact Sun Breathing — the first and most powerful breathing style, created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni during the Sengoku era. Unlike Water Breathing’s flowing defence, Sun Breathing emphasises overwhelming offensive power, though at the cost of extreme physical strain.
Tanjiro’s ability to alternate between Water Breathing and Sun Breathing, adapting his style to the demands of each battle, became one of his defining strengths as a demon slayer.
Personality
Tanjiro is defined by his extraordinary empathy. He feels genuine compassion even for the demons he fights, often pausing to acknowledge the tragedy of their existence. This empathy is not weakness — it is the moral centre of the story, a refusal to dehumanise even those who have become inhuman.
He is stubborn in his convictions, fiercely protective of Nezuko, and willing to endure any hardship in pursuit of a cure for her condition. His sense of smell allows him to perceive the “thread of opening” in combat — the optimal moment to strike — as well as to detect lies, fear, and grief in those around him.
