Giyu Tomioka
Giyu Tomioka is the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps and one of the first Demon Slayers Tanjiro Kamado encounters. His stoic demeanor and extraordinary swordsmanship make him one of the most formidable fighters in the Corps.
Background
Giyu lost his older sister Tsutako when she sacrificed herself to protect him from a demon. He was later
trained by Sakonji Urokodaki alongside his close friend Sabito, who died during the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane. These losses left Giyu with deep survivor's guilt and a belief that he was unworthy of his Hashira title — since Sabito protected him during the Selection and defeated almost every demon singlehandedly.
Abilities
Water Breathing
As the Water Hashira, Giyu has complete mastery of all ten forms of Water Breathing. His technique is refined to the point where his strikes are nearly invisible to lower-ranked demons.
Dead Calm (Eleventh Form)
Giyu is the only known Water Breathing user to have created an original eleventh form: Dead Calm (凪, Nagi). This technique ceases all movement in his sword, creating a zone of stillness that nullifies any attack that enters its range. It was powerful enough to completely neutralize Rui's threads and hold off attacks from Upper Rank demons.
Role in the Story
Giyu first appears in Chapter 1, where he encounters Tanjiro carrying his demon-turned sister Nezuko. Initially intending to kill Nezuko, he relents after witnessing her protect Tanjiro, and directs them to Sakonji Urokodaki for training — setting the entire story in motion.
He plays a critical role in several major arcs:
- Mount Natagumo Arc — Arrives to save Tanjiro from the Spider Demon family, defeating the Father Spider Demon and Rui (Lower Rank Five)
- Hashira Training Arc — Refuses to participate initially due to his self-doubt, but Tanjiro convinces him to rejoin
- Infinity Castle Arc — Fights alongside Tanjiro against Akaza (Upper Rank Three), where he unlocks his Demon Slayer Mark
- Sunrise Countdown Arc — Participates in the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji
Personality
Giyu is notably reserved and socially awkward, often perceived as aloof by his fellow Hashira. Shinobu Kocho frequently points out that he is disliked by the others, though this is partly teasing. Beneath his quiet exterior, Giyu possesses a strong sense of justice and deep compassion — his decision to spare Nezuko is the catalyst for the entire narrative.
