The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are a professional cricket team based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Founded in 2022 as one of two new franchises added to the Indian Premier League (IPL)3, the team is owned by RPSG Group and played its inaugural season that same year. They are one of three active IPL franchises yet to win an IPL title, alongside Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans2.

History

Formation (2022)

The Lucknow Super Giants were established in October 2021 when the IPL expanded to 10 teams for the 2022 season. RPSG Group won the bidding for the Lucknow franchise at a record price of INR 7,090 crore. The team was coached by Andy Flower in its inaugural season and led by KL Rahul3.

The franchise made an immediate impact in their debut season (2022), finishing third in the league stage with nine wins from 15 matches. In the Eliminator, they faced Royal Challengers Bengaluru but lost in a high-scoring finish to end their debut campaign2.

Early Success (2022-2023)

In 2023, the team again finished third in the league stage and qualified for the playoffs. However, they suffered the same fate in the Eliminator, losing to Mumbai Indians2. KL Rahul missed part of the season due to injury but remained the spiritual leader of the side.

The franchise experienced its first major dip in 2024, finishing seventh with seven wins from 14 matches. This decline continued into 20253.

Leadership Transition (2025)

Prior to the 2025 season, LSG released KL Rahul and acquired Rishabh Pant from Delhi Capitals for a record INR 27 crore at the auction. Pant was named captain, marking a new era for the franchise. Andy Flower departed and was replaced by former Australia batsman Justin Langer as head coach3.

Franchise Summary

The Lucknow Super Giants represent a new-era IPL franchise that burst onto the scene with immediate playoff qualifications in their first two seasons. Despite possessing explosive batting talent including Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis, and a solid Indian core anchored by KL Rahul, the franchise has struggled to progress beyond the Eliminator stage2.

The transition to Rishabh Pant as captain in 2025 signals an aggressive new direction. With Pant's explosive batting and leadership, combined with Justin Langer's coaching, LSG aims to return to playoff contention. However, they remain one of only three franchises never to have reached an IPL final2.

The team plays its home games at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, one of India's newer international cricket venues.
