Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (DC) is a professional Twenty20 cricket team based in Delhi, that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise was originally known as Delhi Daredevils from 2008 to 2018, before being rebranded as Delhi Capitals in 2018. The team is co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group, and plays its home matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000 spectators.
Delhi Capitals have reached the IPL final once, in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians. The franchise has qualified for the playoffs six times and has been one of the more consistent teams in recent seasons.
Franchise History
Delhi Daredevils Era (2008–2017)
The franchise was established in 2008 as one of the eight original IPL teams. At the inaugural auction, the Delhi franchise was bought by the GMR Group. The team was originally named Delhi Daredevils and played its first season in 2008, finishing seventh.
Over the next decade, Delhi Daredevils had mixed results. The team's best finish during this period came in 2012, when they finished third in the league stage before losing in the semi-finals.
Rebranding and Resurgence (2018–Present)
In 2018, the franchise was rebranded as Delhi Capitals. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer (captain from 2019 to 2022), DC emerged as a competitive team.
In 2020, Delhi Capitals reached their first IPL final. The team finished second in the league stage and defeated Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier before losing to them in the final by five wickets. This remains DC's best performance in the IPL.
Ownership
Delhi Capitals is co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group. Parth Jindal, co-owner and founder of JSW Sports, is the public face of the ownership group.
Team Identity
The franchise's colors are blue and red. The logo features a stylized "DC" monogram. The team is nicknamed "Capitals."
For IPL 2026, the team is captained by Axar Patel, who took over from Shreyas Iyer in 2023. The head coach is Ricky Ponting, the former Australian batsman.
