HarBhajan Singh (born July 3, 1980) is a former Indian international cricketer who is widely regarded as one of India's greatest off-spinners. Known for his ability to turn matches upside down with his leg-spin variations, "Bhajji" was a crucial member of the Indian bowling attack across all formats. He played 103 Test matches, 236 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 28 T20 Internationals for India, taking over 600 international wickets 1.

Harbhajan's career was marked by his ability to bowl long spells, pick up wickets in clusters, and bowl with excellent control. His duels with Australian batsmen, particularly his battle with Andrew Symonds, became legendary. He was instrumental in India's victories in the 2001 Test series against Australia and the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Early Life and Domestic Career

Harbhajan Singh was born on July 3, 1980, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, into a Sikh family. He grew up playing tennis-ball cricket in the streets of Hoshiarpur and showed exceptional bowling talent from a young age. He attended the Guru Nanak Dev College in Chandigarh and played club cricket for Punjab.

He made his domestic debut for Punjab in 1997 and quickly established himself as one of Punjab's leading bowlers. His ability to turn the ball sharply and bowl with excellent control caught the attention of national selectors.

International Career

Early Years (1997-2004)

Harbhajan made his ODI debut against New Zealand in 1997 and his Test debut against Australia in 1998. Initially struggled to secure a regular place in the team, but his performance in the 2001 series against Australia—where he took 32 wickets—cemented his place in the Indian team.

His 15-wicket haul against Australia in the 2001 Test series at Eden Gardens was one of the most memorable performances by an Indian bowler in recent history.

Peak Years (2005-2012)

Harbhajan's career peaked between 2005 and 2012, where he became India's primary spin bowler:

  • 2007 T20 World Cup: Took 12 wickets, helping India win the tournament
  • 2008: Ranked as the number one Test bowler in ICC rankings
  • 2011 World Cup: Took 15 wickets, helping India reach the final

His ability to bowl in the second innings and pick up crucial wickets made him one of the most valuable bowlers in world cricket.

Later Career (2013-2020)

Harbhajan continued to play a key role in the Indian bowling attack until his retirement from international cricket in 2020. He finished with 709 international wickets.

He was known for his ability to bowl long spells and pick up wickets in clusters. His partnership with Anil Kumble was one of the most successful spin partnerships in Indian cricket history.

Indian Premier League

Harbhajan has been a prominent figure in the IPL, playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from 2008 to 2015 and later for Kolkata Knight Riders (2016-2017), Mumbai Indians (2018-2019), and Punjab Kings (2020).

With CSK, he was instrumental in their championship wins in 2010, 2011, and 2018. His experience and tactical nous made him one of the most respected captains and leaders in the league.

His best IPL season came in 2013 with CSK, where he took 21 wickets at an average of 23.85.
