Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir (born October 2, 1981) is a former Indian international cricketer known for his explosive left-handed batting and crucial performances in ICC tournaments. Often referred to as "The Knight" by fans, Gambhir was instrumental in India's ICC tournament victories in 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, scoring match-winning innings in both finals. His ability to tear apart bowling attacks at the top of the order made him one of the most feared openers in limited-overs cricket during his peak years 1.
Gambhir played 147 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 37 Test matches, and 83 T20 Internationals for India, scoring over 10,000 international runs. His partnership with Virender Sehwag at the top of the order was one of the most destructive opening pairs in limited-overs cricket. After retiring from international cricket in 2019, he transitioned into politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament from the BJP in 2019.
Early Life and Domestic Career
Gautam Gambhir was born on October 2, 1981, in New Delhi into a middle-class family. He attended the Sultanpuri Public School and showed exceptional cricket talent from a young age. He played junior cricket for Delhi before making his domestic debut for Delhi in 2002.
His domestic cricket performances were outstanding—averaging over 50 in first-class cricket—with consistent performances for the Delhi Giants in the Indian Premier League. His ability to score quickly at the top of the order caught the attention of national selectors.
International Career
Early Years (2003-2006)
Gambhir made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 2003 but struggled to secure a regular place in the team initially. His breakthrough came in 2004 when he scored his first ODI century (125) against Sri Lanka. By 2006, he was established as India's first-choice opener in limited-overs cricket.
His performances in the 2006 DLF Cup against Australia showed his ability to handle pressure, scoring crucial runs in chases.
Peak Years (2007-2012)
Gambhir's career peaked between 2007 and 2012, where he played some of the most memorable innings in Indian cricket:

Gambhir's form declined after 2012, and he was dropped from the team multiple times. However, he made crucial comebacks when needed, including in the 2015 World Cup where he provided valuable experience as a backup opener.
He retired from international cricket in 2018, finishing with over 10,000 international runs.
Indian Premier League
Gambhir was one of the most prominent players in the IPL, playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) from 2008 to 2017, and Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2019.
With Delhi Daredevils, he was the captain from 2011 to 2017 and led them to the playoffs multiple times. His highest IPL score—114*—came against Rajasthan Royals in 2012.
With Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018-2019, he provided experience and leadership to a young team. He retired from the IPL in 2019.
