AB de Villiers (born February 17, 1984) is a former South African international cricketer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in limited-overs cricket. Known for his incredible shot-making ability, explosive batting, and adaptability across all formats, he holds numerous records in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test cricket. He played for South Africa in all three formats before retiring from international cricket in 2018 1.

De Villiers is particularly famous for his ability to score runs at an extraordinary rate in limited-overs cricket, his improvisation against spin bowling, and his match-winning performances in high-pressure situations. Early Life and Domestic Career

AB de Villiers was born on February 17, 1984, in Pretoria, South Africa. He showed exceptional cricket talent from a young age and played for the South Africa Under-19 team before making his domestic debut for the Titans in 2003. His breakthrough came in the 2004-05 season, where he scored over 1,000 runs for the season and earned his senior international debut in late 2004 5.

Early Years (2004-2010)

De Villiers made his Test debut against England in 2004 and his ODI debut against England in 2005. Initially a middle-order batsman, he established himself as a key player in the South African lineup across formats. His first major international achievement came in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, where he played a crucial role in South Africa's run to the semi-finals.

Rise to Stardom (2010-2015)

This period marked De Villiers' emergence as one of the best batsmen in world cricket. In 2010, he scored his first ODI century and quickly became South Africa's anchor in limited-overs cricket. His 2015 World Cup performance was exceptional—he scored 482 runs at an average of 96.40, including five half-centuries, helping South Africa reach the semi-finals 1.

His 2015 innings against New Zealand, where he scored 76 in just 47 balls, and his 2014 innings against Pakistan (74 in 51 balls) showcased his ability to accelerate rapidly.

Peak Years (2015-2018)

The year 2015 marked De Villiers' peak. He was named South African Cricketer of the Year and one of the top ODI batsmen in the world. His partnerships with Hashim Amla at the top of the order became one of the most destructive opening pairs in ODIs.

De Villiers has been a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2011, playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Mumbai Indians. His most memorable IPL performances came with RCB, where he formed a lethal partnership with Virat Kohli 3.

He was instrumental in RCB's run to the IPL finals in 2016, scoring 687 runs at a strike rate of 158.72. His 82* against Gujarat Lions in 2016 and his 76 against Mumbai Indians in 2019 are counted among the best IPL innings.
