The Sinnoh League, officially known as the Lily of the Valley Conference, is the regional Pokémon League tournament held in the Sinnoh region. In the Pokémon anime, it serves as the culminating event of the Diamond and Pearl series, taking place across episodes 182–189 of the Sinnoh League Victors season. The conference is held annually on Lily of the Valley Island and determines which Trainer earns the right to challenge the Sinnoh Elite Four and Champion. 1
To enter the Lily of the Valley Conference, Trainers must collect all eight Sinnoh Gym Badges by defeating the region's Gym Leaders. The Sinnoh Gym Leaders include Roark (Oreburgh), Gardenia (Eterna), Maylene (Veilstone), Crasher Wake (Pastoria), Fantina (Hearthome), Byron (Canalave), Candice (Snowpoint), and Volkner (Sunyshore). Ash Ketchum earned his final badge — the Beacon Badge — by defeating Volkner in Sunyshore City, qualifying him for the conference. 12
Only 64 Trainers qualified for the tournament, making it the first conference Ash participated in with fewer than 100 entrants. 3
The conference follows a multi-stage elimination format with escalating battle complexity: 1
The conference notably became the first Pokémon League tournament to establish a direct connection between the conference winner and the right to challenge the Elite Four and Champion. It was also the first to feature a Trainer using Legendary Pokémon in competition. 1
Ash entered the Lily of the Valley Conference with a mixed team drawn from both his current Sinnoh roster and reserve Pokémon from Professor Oak's laboratory. His tournament run marked his best League performance at that point in the series. 2
Ash faced Nando, a Trainer he had encountered earlier in his Sinnoh journey, in a three-on-three battle. Ash won the match, advancing to the next round. 12
Conway, known for his analytical battle style, proved a strategic opponent. Ash overcame Conway's tactical approach to advance to the Top 8. 1
The quarterfinal battle between Ash and his long-standing rival Paul is widely regarded as one of the greatest battles in the Pokémon anime. Their rivalry, which had defined much of the Diamond and Pearl series, reached its conclusion in this full six-on-six showdown. Ash's Infernape — a Pokémon Paul had previously abandoned as a Chimchar — delivered the decisive blow, activating its Blaze ability to defeat Paul's Electivire. The victory represented both a competitive triumph and an ideological one, vindicating Ash's philosophy of trust and friendship over Paul's harsh training methods. 24
In the semifinals, Ash faced Tobias, a mysterious Trainer who had swept through the entire tournament using only his Darkrai — a Legendary Pokémon. Ash's Sceptile managed to defeat Darkrai, becoming the only Pokémon in the conference to do so. Tobias then sent out a Latios, another Legendary Pokémon. Ash's Pikachu battled Latios to a double knockout, but with no remaining Pokémon, Ash was eliminated. He placed in the Top 4, his highest League finish up to that point. 124
Paul reached the Top 8 before falling to Ash. His team throughout the conference included Aggron, Gastrodon, Drapion, Ninjask, Froslass, and Electivire. 2
Barry, another of Ash's Sinnoh rivals, competed but was eliminated in the Top 16 round. 1
Conway advanced to the Top 16 before losing to Ash. 1
Tobias won the entire conference, defeating every opponent without losing a single round. His known Pokémon were Darkrai and Latios, with his remaining four team members never revealed. 14
The Lily of the Valley Conference is the centrepiece of Pokémon: DP Sinnoh League Victors, the thirteenth season of the Pokémon anime and the fourth and final season of the Diamond and Pearl series. The season comprises 34 episodes, making it the shortest dubbed season to have completed airing. It premiered on 5 June 2010 and concluded on 5 February 2011 on Cartoon Network. 3
Beyond the League, the season also covers Dawn's participation in the Sinnoh Grand Festival, where she reaches the finals before losing to her rival Zoey. Following the conference, Ash and Brock return to Kanto while Dawn remains in Sinnoh, bringing the Diamond and Pearl era to a close. 3
The Sinnoh League is frequently cited by fans as one of the strongest League arcs in the anime's history, primarily due to the Ash vs. Paul rivalry battle and the emotional payoff of Infernape's character arc. Ash's Top 4 placement set a new benchmark for his competitive achievements, a record that would stand until the Kalos League. The controversial inclusion of Tobias and his Legendary Pokémon sparked lasting debate about competitive fairness in the anime's tournament structure. 45
