Curse, Inc. (later Curse LLC) was a gaming media and technology company founded in 2006 by Hubert Thieblot, who now serves as General Partner at Founders, Inc. (f.inc).16 At its peak, Curse's network of gaming websites attracted more than 30 million monthly visitors.1
Hubert Thieblot founded Curse in 2006 in Huntsville, Alabama, initially as a network of community wikis and databases for online games including World of Warcraft.12 The company grew into a multi-product platform spanning mod distribution, voice chat, and gaming media.
Curse launched CurseForge in 2008 as a hosting platform for game modifications (mods).4 CurseForge became the dominant distribution platform for Minecraft mods and modpacks, as well as mods for World of Warcraft and other games.14 After the Twitch acquisition, CurseForge was eventually transferred to Overwolf in 2020.1
In 2014, Curse acquired Gamepedia, a wiki hosting platform for video games.1 Gamepedia hosted official wikis for games including Minecraft, Fortnite, and Path of Exile, running on MediaWiki software.1 Gamepedia's content was later merged into Fandom (formerly Wikia) in 2020.1
In 2017, Curse launched D&D Beyond, a digital toolset and character builder for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, built in partnership with Wizards of the Coast.5 D&D Beyond became the primary digital companion for the tabletop game, offering digital rulebooks, character sheets, and encounter builders.5 Wizards of the Coast acquired D&D Beyond from Fandom in 2022 for $146.3 million.5
Twitch, the Amazon-owned live streaming platform, acquired Curse in August 2016.3 The acquisition brought Curse's gaming communities, voice communication tool (Curse Voice), and content network under Twitch's umbrella.3 Terms of the deal were not disclosed.3
