Emory Andrew Tate III (born December 1, 1986) is an American-British internet personality, businessman, and former professional kickboxer.1 He competed in the cruiserweight and light heavyweight divisions from 2005 to the early 2010s, winning titles in the ISKA and Enfusion organizations.1112 After his fighting career, he became widely known online for promoting views described by media outlets as misogynistic.7 Meta removed him from Facebook and Instagram in August 2022 for violating its policy on "dangerous organizations and individuals," and TikTok and YouTube followed with bans the same month.378 He was the third-most googled person globally in 2023.1 As of March 2025, Tate faces six legal investigations — four criminal and two civil — in Romania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.6
Tate was born at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.1 His father, Emory Tate, was an African American chess international master; his mother, Eileen Tate, is English and worked as a catering assistant.1 He has a younger brother, Tristan, and a younger sister, Janine.1 The family lived in Chicago, Illinois, and Goshen, Indiana, before his parents divorced in 1997, after which his mother moved with the children to Luton, Bedfordshire, England.1 They lived on Marsh Farm, a council estate Tate has described as the "worst area of the worst town."1
Tate began kickboxing in 2005 while living in England.1 By November 2008 he ranked seventh in the UK's light heavyweight division under the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA).1 He won titles in the ISKA and Enfusion organizations, competing under the nickname "Cobra Tate."1112 His professional kickboxing record stands at 76 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw across 86 fights, with 32 wins by knockout.1
In June 2016, Tate entered the seventeenth series of the Channel 5 reality show Big Brother as one of a group of contestants housed separately, called "The Others."2 He was removed from the house after several days. Channel 5 stated the removal was "because of information which came to light" outside the house.2 Following his removal, a video surfaced appearing to show him striking a woman with a belt. Tate said the video had been edited and that the woman was a friend.2
After kickboxing, Tate and his brother Tristan operated a webcam modelling business.1 Tate later launched online courses, including Hustler's University, a subscription service that gained 100,000 subscribers before being relaunched as The Real World.1 He also ran a private group called The War Room; the BBC reported that the group coerced women into sex work and taught violence against women.1 In August 2023, his online ventures were estimated to generate approximately $5 million in monthly revenue.1
Tate has called himself a misogynist and has been described by media as the "king of toxic masculinity."1 He has promoted views associated with the manosphere and has been politically described as right-wing and far-right.1
In August 2022, Meta removed Tate's accounts from Facebook and Instagram, citing its policy on "dangerous organizations and individuals."7 TikTok banned his account the same week.3 YouTube removed his channel shortly after for violating its policies.8 Tate's Twitter account, which had been suspended since 2017, was reinstated in November 2022 following Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform.1 As of June 2025, he had 10.7 million followers on X (formerly Twitter).1
On April 11, 2022, the US embassy in Bucharest received a report that an American woman was being held against her will at a property owned by the Tates in Pipera, Romania.6 Romanian police raided the home and a nearby webcam studio, discovering four women, two of whom said they were being held involuntarily.6 Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) opened an investigation into human trafficking and rape.6
On December 29, 2022, police arrested Andrew, Tristan, and two Romanian women.46 DIICOT accused the Tates of recruiting women through the "loverboy" method — making false promises of romantic relationships — and forcing them to create explicit content for websites including OnlyFans as part of an organized crime group allegedly formed in early 2021.4 Prosecutors initially identified six potential victims.6
On June 20, 2023, DIICOT indicted all four defendants on charges of rape, human trafficking in continued form, and forming an organized crime group to sexually exploit women.4 Seven victims had been identified by that point.4 Prosecutors allege the crimes took place in Romania, the United States, and the United Kingdom.4
The brothers were held in police custody from December 29, 2022, through March 31, 2023, when a court converted their detention to house arrest.6 Their restrictions were progressively relaxed to judicial control by August 2023, confining them to Romania.6
Romanian authorities seized 29 assets belonging to the Tates or their companies, including 15 luxury cars, more than 10 properties, watches, and sums of money totaling nearly $4 million.6
On August 21, 2024, Romanian police expanded the investigation against Andrew to include trafficking minors, sex with a minor, money laundering, and attempting to influence witnesses.610 DIICOT raided four properties and took six people into custody.6 Prosecutors said the expanded investigation involves 35 alleged victims, including one who was a minor at the time, and that the accused made approximately $2.8 million through sexual exploitation.6
Andrew and Tristan have denied all charges.10
In March 2024, Bedfordshire Police obtained an arrest warrant for both brothers in connection with allegations of rape and trafficking dating to between 2012 and 2015.5 In May 2025, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed it had authorised 21 charges against the brothers: Andrew faces 10 charges connected to three alleged victims, including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution for gain; Tristan faces 11 charges connected to one alleged victim, including rape, actual bodily harm, and human trafficking.5 The CPS stated the charges could only proceed after the Romanian proceedings concluded.5
A separate criminal case in Romania, in which the Tates are accused of human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, has been proceeding in parallel.9 A civil case also opened in July 2024, alleging tax evasion by the brothers and a third person.6
In February 2025, after Romanian prosecutors unexpectedly lifted a two-year travel ban, the brothers flew from Romania to Florida by private jet.510 They returned to Romania in March 2025. Andrew told reporters that "innocent men don't run from anything."5
Tate converted to Islam in October 2022.1 His father, Emory Tate, died in 2015.1
